Laser Hair Reduction
Shaving, plucking, tweezing, waxing—all are temporary fixes for unwanted hair. At The Medspa at The Women's Centre for Excellence, our laser hair removal treatments can quickly and easily reduce unwanted hair on your body or face with longer lasting results.
How does it work?
The secret lies in the technology. Cynosure’s laser hair removal treatments target and destroy the hair cells responsible for hair growth without damaging the surrounding skin. The result is smooth, hair-free skin that lasts! We offer two Cynosure devices for our treatments, the Vectus diode laser and The Icon IPL laser.
How do I prep for treatment?
- Shave the treatment area within 24 hours of your treatment, come fresh shaven for better results, this is for comfort and effectiveness.
- Please remove deodorant prior to your underarm treatment for maximum effectiveness.
- DO NOT wax, pluck, tweeze, use bleaches or hair removal creams for 4 weeks prior to your appointments or during your treatment series. Removing the hair with these methods removes what we are trying to remove with the laser.
- Avoid excessive sun exposure, self tanners and tanning beds 2 weeks before each treatment. Use sunblock with SPF 50 on areas to be treated that are exposed to the sun before and after treatment. Even with SPF, avoid prolonged sun exposure prior to your treatment.
- Avoid sunless tanners 2 weeks prior to your laser treatments.
- Pregnant women should wait until after delivery before proceeding with laser hair removal services.
- Do not take Accutane for 6 months prior to treatment.
- Must be off any antibiotics, steroids or photosensitive medications for 2 weeks prior to your appointment.
After Your Treatment
- Immediately after treatment, there may be erythema (redness) and edema (swelling) of each hair follicle in the treatment site, which may last between 2 hours and up to 2-3 days following treatment. A topical soothing skin care product such as Aloe Vera Gel may be applied following the treatment, if desired.
- Makeup and/or deoderant may be used immediately after treatment if the skin is not irritated.
- AVOID SUN EXPOSURE TO REDUCE THE CHANCE OF HYPERPIGMENTATION. Use a sunblock (SPF 50+) at all times throughout the course of treatment. Avoid picking or scratching the treated skin.
- DO NOT USE any other hair removal treatment products or similar treatments (waxing, electrolysis, or tweezing) that will disturb the hair follicles in the treatment area for 4-6 weeks after the laser treatment was performed. You may continue shaving.
- Anywhere from 5-14 days after treatment, shedding of the treated hair may occur and this appears as new growth. This is NOT new hair growth. You can clean and remove the hair by washing or wiping the area with a wet cloth or loofa sponge.
- There are no restrictions on bathing except to treat the skin gently, as if you had a sun burn, for the first 24 hours.
What Areas can be treated?
We can do laser hair removal just about anywhere on the body. The most common areas for women are the upper lip, chin, underarms and bikini line. Men desire hair removal on the back, shoulders, chest and back of neck. We do arms, legs, toes, ears and more! We can treat any area with the exception of the areas around the eyes.
What to expect during the treatment?
Most people say the treatment feels like a quick pinch or the snap of a rubber band and the sensation is gone before they leave the room. No local anesthesia is required and most people tolerate the treatment well. The length of a laser session may range from a few minutes to an hour, depending on the size and number of areas being treated.
How many treatments are needed?
Because the laser can only permanently disable the hair follicle in the active growth cycle and not all hairs are in this part of the cycle at any one time, most clients require 8-10 treatments to achieve permanent reduction of hair. Our goal is to target hair growth in the Anagen phase where hair growth is active and contains the most melanin. Fewer treatments are needed if your goal is to reduce the number of hairs as well as the coarseness of the remaining hair.
In hormonally induced areas (i.e. women's facial) usually 10-12 treatments will be required. You will need to do touch ups in the future to maintain your results.
Results depend on consistent treatments to ensure we keep on cycle with the change in your hair's growth cycle. Inconsistency will result in the need for more treatments.
