Botox Vs. Xeomin

Effectiveness

Pricing & Rewards

Effectiveness

Botox was the first neuromodulator on the market, being FDA approved in 2002.  Botox has more name recognition and for that reason it has more clinical studies showing its effectiveness and safety over a longer time frame.

Xeomin has been used in Europe since 2008, but was FDA approved for use in the US in 2011.  There are many head to head studies backing its effectiveness and safety as well.  Some studies indicate that Botox gives a stronger, more frozen effect, where Xeomin is a softer and more relaxed effect allowing more movement in the area. Botox and Xeomin both start working around 4-7 days after injection and reach their peak result at 14 days after injection.  Both last on average for 3-4 months.  In some patients the results may be shorter or longer with both products.

Manufacturing

Pricing & Rewards

Effectiveness

Xeomin is derived from the same parent molecule as Botox, but unlike Botox.  Xeomin is manufactured in such a way that the final product is more purified.  This is one of the main innovations that Xeomin brings to the table.  Unlike Botox, Xeomin does not have a preservative protein.    When Botox is injected, the botulinum molecule must free itself from its preservative protein before it is free to bond with the facial muscles.  After it frees itself from the cross linked protein, it immediately bonds to the muscle, and the muscle relaxes.  Once the muscle relaxes, the wrinkle fades away.

With Xeomin, there is no preservative protein.  Therefore, Xeomin is immediately available to the muscle receptors.  It starts to bind immediately, and reduce wrinkling at a markedly fast rate, and at a steady pace.  Xeomin is sometimes described as “The Naked Botox” due to its absence of the carrier proteins present with Botox. In theory this absence of protein carriers would result in fewer allergic reactions or resistance to the neurotoxin.

  • Botox & Xeomin are both FDA approved.
  • Xeomin has no additives; Botox has additional protein preservatives.

What to know BEfore my appointment

In order to minimize the risk of possible side effects and complications, please follow these steps:

  • Avoid taking aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen, Advil®, Motrin®, Nuprin®, Aleve®, Celebrex®, Fish oil, Ginko Biloba, St. John’s Wort and high doses of vitamin E for 7-10 days prior to procedure, as these may cause increase risk of bleeding and bruising at the treated site(s). Regular multi-vitamin and Tylenol® is permitted (If not contraindicated).
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages for 24 hours prior to procedure as this can increase the risk for bleeding and bruising at the treated site(s).
  • If you have any history of Herpes Simplex (cold sores) on your face, make sure you inform the doctor that you have made your appointment with, one week prior to your appointment; this will allow us adequate time to prescribe a medication to prevent an outbreak.
  • Sunburn skin is difficult to treat so avoid exposure to the sun.
  • Eat a small meal or a snack before your appointment.
  • Always inform your doctor of all medications, including supplements you may be taking as well as your medical history.

What to know After My Appointment

These guidelines to follow post treatment have been followed for years, and are still employed today

  • No straining, heavy lifting, vigorous exercise for 2-3 hours following treatment.  It is known that it takes the toxin approximately 2 hours to bind itself to the nerve to start its work, and we do not want to increase circulation to that area to wash away the product from where it was injected.
  • Avoid manipulation of the area for 3 hours following treatment.  (For the same reasons listed above).  This includes not doing a facial, peel, or microdermabrasion after treatment with Botox/Xeomin.  A facial, peel or microdermabrasion can be done in the same appointment only if they are done before the Botox/Xeomin is injected.
  • Facial exercises in the injected areas are recommended for 1 hour following treatment, to stimulate the binding of the toxin only to the localized area.
  • It can take up to 2 weeks (14 days) for the Botox/Xeomin to take full effect.  It is recommended that you contact the office no later than 3 weeks after treatment if the desired effect was not achieved.
  • Make-up can be applied before leaving the office.
  • Retin-A, Glycolic Acid, Vitamin-C and Kinerase can be used, but you must avoid the injected areas for a minimum of 24 hours.
